“…what if the fire was truly burning…”
One of the blessings God has given me is this memorable video of my son, heyarnold22, singing with @RhettMorehouse in worship a few years ago. In fact, I’ve posted it multiple times in the past for which many of you have likely seen. Beyond a proud father watching his son, the words of this particular song have always grabbed me. In particular, “For the sake of the world burn like a fire in me”. The question I’ve been pondering this morning is one that I often ponder listening to this song. It is, “church, what if the fire was truly burning in our hearts?”
To gain a full appreciation of what I’m meaning, you must listen or read the following lyrics allowing them to truly touch your heart. Take a few minutes and do this now!
“For The Sake Of The World”
by Bethel Music
I’m giving up control
I’m never looking back
I surrender all
I’m living for Your glory on the earth
This stirring in my soul
To see the nations bow
For all the world to know
I’m living for Your glory on the earth
Light a flame in my soul for every eye to see
For the sake of the world burn like a fire in me
For every voice to cry out
Burn like a fire in meFor every tongue to confess
You alone are the King
You are the hope of the earth
Burn like a fire in me
Again, I asked, “what if the fire was truly burning in me like is described within the words of this song?” I know in my life, I have moments in time when the fire burns with the passion and stirring which this song relates; however, I have so much more to go. Adding to this, unfortunately, I cross paths with very few people in today’s world that I truly experience this type of fire.
Please don’t take more words out of context nor misconstrue what “burning like a fire” looks like. While it can, it often doesn’t look like someone passionately evangelizing on the street corner. The passion I’m referring is a deep seated fire rooted in a love of our Heavenly Father and His people that when you get next too it, you know it’s a heart on fire. It’s “a flame in my soul for every eye to see” which is unmistakably.
Church, we live in a world with all kinds of passions. Passions for sports, lust, money, positions, affirmations, “likes”, etc, and etc. We often stop to look around and ask, “where are all the people” when it comes to “following Jesus”. While these have some significance, the issues aren’t about the types of music, programs, outreach events, etc, etc. It’s simply that people aren’t being compelled to come join us around the fire as the fire isn’t burning bright enough to allow them to experience the love of the precious gift we’ve all been given.
So, how do we stoke the flames of the fire within? Well, you’ll have to answer this specifically for yourself. For me, it looks like my taking time to get away from the busyness of this life, focus in on my relationship with Him, and allowing Him to refuel my lampstand (Matthew 25:1-13).
May these words be and encouragement to you today, “For the sake of the world burn like a fire in me”!
