When Success Isn’t Enough: The Day Everything Changed

October 28, 2008.

The corner office, the view of downtown Indianapolis, the company car—all of it was gone within minutes. Years of loyalty and achievement ended with a severance envelope and a cab ride home.

What looked like an ending was actually God’s beginning.

That day I began to learn something that took years to sink in:

Success can be a substitute for surrender.

By all outward appearances, I was living the dream—career momentum, financial security, a family I loved. Yet beneath the surface, quiet questions had started to stir:

Is this really what it’s all about? Am I building something eternal—or just impressive?

When the titles and paychecks disappeared, so did the illusion that I was in control. And for the first time, I felt free. The golden handcuffs that had kept me bound to performance finally snapped.

Maybe you’ve felt that tension too—the sense that you’ve reached everything you were supposed to chase, yet something deeper still calls your name.

The truth is, God sometimes dismantles what we build so He can reveal what He’s building in us. It’s not punishment; it’s invitation.

So if you’re standing at your own turning point—between what was and what’s next—take heart.
What feels like failure may be the first step of freedom.

Reflection Question:
Where might God be loosening your “golden handcuffs” so He can lead you into something more?
