When God Changes Color

“You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.” — Jeremiah 29:13

This week, Lisa and I were talking about those seasons when it feels like God isn’t speaking.
When His voice—once so clear, so bright—suddenly seems quiet.

Lisa said something that stopped me:

“Sometimes it’s not that God isn’t speaking anymore.
He’s just wanting to go deeper with us.
So He stops speaking on the surface level—and starts speaking to the spirit.”

That truth came alive for me this morning while watching the yellow finches.
For nearly fifteen years, I thought they disappeared every winter.
But today I learned—they don’t leave at all.
They simply change color.

In summer, their feathers are a brilliant yellow—bright, obvious, and easy to see.
But in winter, they turn olive-brown, blending into the trees.
They’re still there. Still singing. Still being who they are.
They’re just harder to spot.

And I realized—this is how God moves through our seasons, too.

There are times when His presence shines vividly—when His direction, confirmation, or comfort feels unmistakable.
Then there are other times when His voice seems hidden, camouflaged in the ordinary.
It’s not that He’s gone silent.
He’s simply inviting us to go deeper.

When the yellow fades, it doesn’t mean the bird has left.
When God seems quiet, it doesn’t mean He’s absent.
He’s teaching us to see with spiritual eyes—to seek Him not by sight, but by faith.

Maybe the silence isn’t punishment, but preparation.
Maybe He’s shifting the conversation from the surface to the soul.
And maybe, just maybe, the beauty of the yellow bird is not that it’s always bright—but that even when it blends in, it’s still singing.

What if this “quiet” season isn’t about God withdrawing—but about Him drawing you closer?

Prayer:

Lord, help me see You when You seem hidden.
Teach me to recognize Your voice even when it changes tone.
May my faith grow deep enough to trust that You are always near—even when the color fades.
