When God Says Wait
I used to believe that waiting meant nothing was happening.
But waiting, I’ve learned, is often God’s most productive work.
During one of my monthly spiritual retreats, I remember walking the park, frustrated that nothing seemed to be coming together. I kept asking, “God, what’s next?” — and in that still moment, I sensed Him whisper,
“Chris, you’re too focused on the destination.”
That sentence stopped me cold.
I realized I’d been so focused on outcomes that I was missing His presence in the process.
It’s easy to forget that in Scripture, some of God’s greatest movements began in waiting rooms:
Noah on the ark.
Moses in the desert.
David in the cave.
Jesus in the tomb.
Faith isn’t proved by how fast we move, but by how long we can trust when nothing seems to move at all.
Maybe you’re in a season where everything feels slow, uncertain, or silent.
If so, take heart — your waiting isn’t wasted.
God is forming something in you that couldn’t grow any other way.
Reflection Question:
Where might God be growing you in the waiting rather than delivering you from it?
This reflection is adapted from Chapter 5 of From Success to Surrender. If you’re in a season of delay or uncertainty, this chapter will help you see your waiting as worship, not punishment.
