The Moment of Surrender: When Security Becomes the Idol

February 2011.

I was sitting in an advisory-board meeting, facing a $12,000 tax bill I didn’t know how to pay.
But that wasn’t my real issue.

What came out of my mouth surprised even me:

“I think my bigger question is, am I doing what God actually wants me to do?”

My facilitator looked at me and said words that pierced my heart:

“Brother, what are you holding on to too tightly?”

I knew the answer before I spoke it—my 401(k).
It wasn’t just a retirement account; it was my security blanket.
God was inviting me to trust Him with what I’d been clutching most tightly.

That afternoon became a turning point.
When I finally opened my hands, God didn’t just provide—He redefined what provision meant.

We often think surrender is about loss, but it’s really about transfer: moving ownership from us to Him.
When we let go, God begins to write the rest of the story.

Maybe you’re in that kind of season right now—
not a failure, but a filter—where God is revealing what you’ve been depending on more than Him.

Reflection Question:
What “security blanket” might God be asking you to release so He can replace it with peace?

This reflection is drawn from Chapter 2 of From Success to Surrender.
If you’re navigating your own turning point, you’ll find practical steps for letting go and trusting God’s timing inside the book.
