Last Call: Why Reflection Can Lead to a Profitable New Year
This past week, during our Truth At Work board meeting, something extraordinary happened. As we gathered around tables, each adorned with stones symbolizing milestones, we paused to reflect. Our goal? To look back on the past year and remember God’s faithfulness.
Admittedly, many of us don’t gravitate toward this kind of exercise. Half the room shared how they typically prefer to focus on the future, avoiding the discomfort of revisiting past struggles. But as we shared stories, something powerful emerged.
Yes, there was pain in looking back—moments of hardship, suffering, and unanswered questions. Yet in every story, God’s faithfulness stood out like a thread woven through the challenges. For some, reflection brought clarity about how those hard moments shaped their growth. For others, it revealed that even in the toughest seasons, they were not alone.
This reminded us of Joshua 4, where the Israelites crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land. God instructed Joshua to gather twelve stones from the riverbed to serve as a memorial. These stones were meant to remind future generations of God’s faithfulness in delivering them through impossible circumstances.
In the same way, those stones on our table helped us recognize how God has been present in our own stories. Reflecting on the past might be uncomfortable, but it can also be a source of profound hope and optimism for what lies ahead.
As we head into 2025, I encourage you to reflect on your own “stones of remembrance.” What lessons or blessings from this past year can guide you into the new one?
